Ford designs new sat-nav system

The ‘MirrorNavi’ mirror, available on all Ford car and commercial vehicles, is an extended mirror complete with a holder for the sat-nav.

Ford believes the holder, which will improve insurance premiums because it is classed as a fitted navigation system, will also improve security, particularly in its van range, because the holder does not leave tell-tale sucker marks on the windscreen.

The MirrorNavi features tinted and dimming mirror glass, battery charging connection and anti-theft security as well as the 3.5" screen capable of displaying 2D or 3D maps in full colour.

The system also offers EcoRoute software to reduce mileage and associated fuel costs, voice response for more than 70 languages and an internal memory card slot.

Ford says the system, priced at £299, can be fitted in an hour and leaves no visible wires on display. The system is expected to be popular with business users and LCV drivers in models such as the Ford Transit and Ford Transit Connect.

Equally, Ford suggests it will offer a less cluttered dashboard in smaller models such as the Ford Fiesta supermini and Ford Focus hatchback.

The Ford MirrorNavi, made by Garmin and Wollnikom, can be installed at all Perrys Ford dealers on any Ford car or van for £299 plus dealer fitting charges.
