From early next year we should see some very exciting developments for the large family car market. Several brand new models in this sector are getting launch while others are receiving refreshes. Not only are these new large family cars practical but they also impressively efficient and they are getting more and more filled with technology.

SEAT Leon ST
Following the launch earlier this year of the new SEAT Leon five-door hatchback and then the three-door SC, the ST estate derivative arrives early next year.
With the Leon ST, SEAT aims to deliver the same sporting characteristics which the Spanish car brand are renowned for while.
At the same time though the car is certainly one of the company’s more practical offerings with its lengthier wheelbase and a boot capacity of 587 litres. This number can increase to 1,470 litres when the rear seats are folded.
Even more exciting, the new SEAT Leon ST is available with several highly-efficient engines sourced from the brand’s owners Volkswagen. These engines include a 109bhp 1.6-litre TDI diesel for the ‘Ecomotive’ specification with CO2 emissions at just 87g/km.
The new SEAT Leon ST will launch in January 2014.
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s sure to be worth the wait. The next-generation Ford Mondeo saloon will launch to the UK market during the latter stages of 2014.
The five-door family saloon sports Ford’s latest signature grille and other sharp detailing to give it a highly sophisticated look. The new Mondeo is also smartly presented inside, and the interior is complete with the latest Ford gadgets like SYNC phone connectivity.
Engines available for the next Ford Mondeo will include the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol, keeping CO2 emissions below 130g/km. Also available will be an 180bhp 1.6-litre turbodiesel and a 200bhp 2.0-litre petrol unit.
The next generation Mazda3 will introduce a new five-door fastback bodystyle to the range. This gives the car a larger and more saloon-like appearance then the hatchback form which the Mazda3 was traditionally only sold in until now.
The Mazda3 fastback offers greater practical advantages over its hatchback counterpart and it’s just an all-round smart-looking and impressively practical car.
In the fastback the rear seat backrests fold almost flat and the boot opening width is increased by 100mm.
Engines for the Mazda3 fastback include 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol unit, with a combined fuel economy of 56.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 118g/km. There’s also a Skyactiv-D diesel engine which offers even greater efficiency.
The new Mazda3 range launches in Britain during January 2014.
The Kia Optima saloon was first released to the UK in late 2011 and now a welcome refresh will come for it during spring 2014.
With customer feedback and other developments in mind, the Kia Optima will get an updated design and new luxury and safety kit. This will include a new infotainment system.
Fresh design features for the updated Optima will include new headlights, fog lamps, rear lights, bumpers and wheels. At the front, the LED daytime running lights are moved from the bumper into the headlight, which is consistent with other Kia models.
For the updated Kia Optima, a ‘Sport Pack’ will also be offered on certain trim levels. This will give the saloon an even more sportier and exclusive look.
Following the reveal of the new S-MAX concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the production-ready model can be anticipated for arrival during 2014.
The five-seater MPV now sports the bold grille and sharp exterior lines which adorn other new Ford models on sale now.
The new Ford S-MAX looks to have an all-round more imposing stance and also a more premium feel in its presentation. Engines are set to include an efficient 1.5-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine.
