Eligible Allowances

The Motability Scheme is open to those receiving eligible allowances—the page below gives you lots of informaton to help you find out if you qualify and take the first step toward greater independence.

Am I eligible?

You can apply to join the Motability Scheme if you receive one of the following government disability allowances:

  1. Enhanced rate mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  2. Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  3. Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  4. War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  5. Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (Scotland)
  6. Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (Scotland)

Check your eligibility by answering a few questions on Motability’s own website here.

If you’re looking to join the Motability Scheme, you’ll need at least 12 months remaining on your allowance. You can check your award letter for this information; if you're unsure, your allowance provider will be happy to confirm the details for you.

What are the different Motability allowances?

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

  • This helps with extra costs of living for people with long-term health conditions or disabilities. It’s not means-tested or affected by earnings or savings.
  • If you receive the higher rate mobility part of PIP and have at least 12 months left on your award, you can apply for the Motability Scheme.
  • You’ll receive a letter inviting you for a PIP reassessment when your award is coming to an end, but you won’t be able to order a new vehicle until your PIP has been confirmed.
  • To apply for PIP, you need to be aged between 16 and state pension age.
  • To apply for PIP, you need to have daily living or mobility needs and require extra help because of an illness, disability or mental health condition.
  • If you’ve reached state pension age, you’ll need to apply for Attendance Allowance instead of PIP. This cannot be used for the Motability Scheme.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

  • This helps disabled people aged between 16 and state pension age with extra costs. It’s not means-tested or affected by earnings, other forms of income or savings.
  • Please note that you can only make a new claim for DLA if you're claiming for a child under 16.

Adult Disability Payment

  • This helps Scottish people with a disability that affects their everyday life with their extra costs.
  • This allowance has been introduced by Social Security Scotland which manages disability assistance payments.
  • This allowance is also replacing PIP in Scotland for people aged between 16 and state pension age.

Child Disability Payment

  • This helps Scottish children with a disability that affects their everyday life with their extra costs.
  • This allowance is replacing Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children aged between three months and 18 years.
  • If you receive the higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment and have at least 12 months left, you can apply for the Motability Scheme.
  • Children in Scotland who are awarded this allowance can keep it up to the age of 18. For the rest of the UK, child DLA stops at 16, when they can apply for PIP.

War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

  • This helps people who have a disability caused by military service with their extra mobility costs.
  • This allowance is provided by Veterans UK, and with it, you can apply for the Motability Scheme (if you have at least 12 months left on your award).
  • You can check your eligibility for this allowance on the Veterans UK website. Or call them on 0808 1914 218.
  • You can’t receive WPMS if you already receive DLA, PIP or Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP).

Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

  • This helps service personnel and veterans who’ve been seriously injured during service on or after 6 April 2005 and are entitled to a Guaranteed Income Payment of 50% or higher through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme.
  • The allowance provides extra money to cover costs as a result of the injury.
  • This allowance is provided by Veterans UK, and with it, you can apply for the Motability Scheme (if you have at least 12 months left on your award).
  • If you’re eligible for AFIP, you don’t need an initial or future assessment, and you’ll keep receiving payments throughout your life. It’s not means-tested or affected by earnings, other income or savings.
  • You can’t receive AFIP if you already receive DLA, PIP or WPMS.
  • You can check your eligibility for this allowance on the Veterans UK website. Or call them on 0808 1914 218.
