What maintenance is required for EVs?
EVs have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, which means less routine maintenance overall. However, that doesn’t mean they’re maintenance-free, as they have some specialised components that can need some TLC.
Here’s what’s typically included:
- Battery health: While EV batteries are designed to last for years, regular software updates and inspections help keep them efficient.
- Coolant systems: Some EVs use coolant to regulate battery and power electronics temperature.
- Tyres: Regular rotations, pressure checks and replacements as needed.
- Brakes: Thanks to regenerative braking, EV brake pads last longer, but they still need occasional checks.
- Lights and windshield wipers: Just like any other car, these require occasional replacement.
- Software: Electric vehicles depend significantly on software to operate efficiently. During a service, technicians will inspect and install any available updates to enhance performance, safety and available features.
- Lights, wipers and electrical systems: As with any car, these are checked to ensure they’re functioning correctly and safely. Servicing also plays a key role in ensuring that safety features are working correctly.
