Not All Rental Companies Are Equal For Car Hirers

A third of car hirers book the cheapest car available, but this could prove a false economy. According to a new YouGov survey, 33% of motorists will book the cheapest car, but only 22% check the price of any ‘extras’ they might need when making the booking.

Extra Costs

A low headline price for the hire car can hide extra costs at the rental desk. For instance, over one in seven car hirers (15%) have spent additional cash when they picked their car up, even though they thought they’d paid for everything when they booked their hire car. What’s more, 19% were shocked at the price of ‘extras,’ which can triple the original car rental price. However, book with Perrys and you’ll find us totally transparent with our car hire costs and we will always find the best solution for your needs.

Wallet Emptying

According to the study, the biggest hit on a consumer’s wallet is the car hire excess insurance charged by some rental companies. This protects hirers against the first part of an insurance claim if the vehicle is damaged or stolen, and can cost around £17 a day. Only one in four consumers (25%) said that clear information was available on excess waiver/insurance products when they made the booking. The survey also found that only 54% of drivers understood the car hire company’s policy on fuel when they made their booking, which could be risky as some rental companies charge for a full tank of petrol at pick-up.

Research

“It’s important that motorists are not taken in by a low headline price only to be stung at the rental desk,” said Ernesto Suarez, of iCarhireinsurance.com, the company who commissioned the poll. “It is possible not to spend a single penny if you bring your own sat-nav and child’s booster seat, and don’t put an extra driver on the policy. Also, always research your rental provider’s car hire excess insurance in advance of travel.”

Advantages

However, the advantages of car rental go way beyond the cost. Motorists can avoid the sardine-can-like conditions often experienced when travelling by public transport. You can also bring as much luggage as the rental car will hold. Safety and comfort are guaranteed with reputable firms such as Perrys, and vehicles tend to be under six months old and come equipped with the latest technology, as well as 24/7 breakdown assistance.
