Meet Peugeot's 500bhp 308 R Hybrid concept

Peugeot has unveiled a radical new hybrid concept version of the 308 hatchback, which comes complete with 500bhp and four-wheel drive.

Dubbed the 308 R Hybrid, the new concept model has been developed by Peugeot’s racing division, which was also responsible for creating the critically acclaimed RCZ R sports coupe.

According to Peugeot, the 308 R Hybrid has been developed to “push the boundaries of sporting prowess” for a car of its kind, and the results are truly shocking.

0-62mph in just four seconds

Powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a separate electric motor for each wheel, the 308 R Hybrid generates a total of 493bhp, which can take it from 0-62mph in just four seconds flat.

Such a supercar-bothering benchmark sprint time doesn’t come at the expense of high emissions, however, as the new Peugeot concept emits only 70g/km of CO2, putting it well below the 90g threshold for free road tax.

Captivating both under the bonnet and above, the 308 R Hybrid is based on the same design as the popular 308, albeit with a range of dynamic and imposing new exterior features to reflect its performance.

The grille features a special chequered pattern to optimise the amount of air that reaches the powertrain to cool it, while it also features deep scoops under the grille and on the sides.

Echoing the design of the 208 GTi, with its unique two-tone red and black finish, the R Hybrid version is instead finished in contrasting black and blue, using the same contrasting gloss/matte paintwork.

At the rear, it features a narrow spoiler to increase aerodynamic efficiency, while a pair of twin air scoops keep internal temperature down by drawing hot air away from the battery.

On the inside, the R Hybrid features the same ‘i-Cockpit’ design as the regular 308, but comes with sporting touches like four leather-finished sports seats and red detailing on instruments and dials.

It’s also packed with unique materials like a special lightweight fabric, while it also features a compact leather steering wheel with steering-mounted gear shifters for the six-speed gearbox.

Rakish design, high-tech kit

Finishing touches include a heads-up display to relay driver information directly onto the windscreen, plus four selectable driving modes to harness the full potential of the R Hybrid.

Drivers can choose to combine both power sources to get the best performance, or can opt to choose to use only the engine or only the electric motors to save fuel and money.

As it’s still only in the concept stage, it’s currently unknown whether the 308 R Hybrid will make it to production, however the new Peugeot 308 hatchback is available to buy now, priced from £14,995.
