Mazda6 Tourer review

The Mazda6 had its work cut out for it when it was first introduced. Designed to take on class-leading mid-range competitors like the Ford Mondeo, the Japanese newcomer had big boots to fill, but has since risen to become one of the best in the current crop of family cars.

We already praised the saloon version of the Mazda6, so it stands to reason that the Tourer estate version should be good too.

Available with a large and spacious boot, plus Mazda’s range of Skyactiv engines that are as potent as they are efficient, it’s as popular with families as it is with company drivers.

Exterior

The Mazda6 saloon is undoubtedly one of the prettiest family saloons on the market, and even with its larger estate dimensions, the Tourer still manages to look stylish and dynamic.

Designed in accordance with Mazda’s KODO design language, it features the same sharp nose and sculpted front wings as the saloon for a sporty design.

The roofline has been gracefully integrated into the design, while all models receive distinctive LED daytime running lights. Metallic paint is available for an extra £540 for some extra style points, while higher trim levels add silver roof rails and xenon headlights.

At 4,805mm long and 1,840 wide, it has plenty of room on the inside without being too wide or ungainly, meaning that it’s relatively easy to park. Five doors grant easy access for occupants, while its safety-conscious design saw it earn top marks in the Euro NCAP crash tests upon its release.

Interior

Uncluttered and straightforward, the cabin and dash layout of the Mazda6 is focused on making it as distraction-free and easy to use for drivers as possible.

That’s not to say that it’s uninspiring visually, however, as it made the shortlist for the list of 10 Best Interiors as voted for by WardsAuto World back in 2013.

Thanks to the longer length of the Tourer over the standard saloon model, the Mazda6 estate is spacious and comfortable on the inside for up to five passengers.

With the rear seats in place, the Tourer has an ample boot size of 506 litres, enough to easily swallow a couple of large suitcases or similarly-sized items. However, with the simple pull of levers in the boot, the rear seats automatically fold down to reveal a very long load bay.

There’s no step in the floor, so sliding larger items in and out is a breeze, while total capacity clocks in at an impressive 1,648 litres.

Good news up front as well, as the front seats offer plenty of room to stretch out, while the high roofline means that there’s plenty of headroom for the driver and for the passengers.

Five trim levels are available on the Tourer as on the saloon: entry-level SE models, SE-Nav, mid-range SE-L, plus the SE-L Nav and the range-topping Sport model.

Standard equipment is comprehensive, with cruise control, air conditioning and a leather steering wheel with remote audio controls all as standard. Mazda’s infotainment system with a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen is also thrown in, along with MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity.

Mid-range models come with an upgraded kit list, including privacy glass for the windows, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, plus dual zone climate control and two extra speakers.

Finally, the Sport trim gets a premium Bose surround-sound system with 11 speakers, full leather trim and heated seats.

On the road

Each Mazda6 Tourer model is available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines from Mazda’s frugal Skyactive range. A 2.0-litre petrol engine is available with outputs of 143bhp and 163bhp, while a 2.2-litre diesel is available with a choice of 148bhp or 173bhp outputs.

The most powerful version, available on the Sport trim, will take the Mazda6 from 0-62mph in 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 134mph. For drivers more concerned with economy, the lower-powered diesel is the pick of the bunch, averaging 67mpg with just 108g/km of CO2 emitted.

A large rear window makes reversing pretty easy, while SE-L and Sport models come with front and rear parking sensors to make things even easier.

Despite its larger size, the Tourer doesn’t feel big or ungainly on the road. The seats put the driver in a great driving positon with all-round visibility and the engines lend it a distinctly athletic feel for an estate car.

On the road, the ride is comfortable and body control is good, showing that Mazda has engineered the car with fun driving experience in mind. It’s also refined and the engines quiet, so motorway cruising is effortless, particularly with the standard-spec cruise control.

Verdict

With an extremely comprehensive spec list, even on entry-level models, and an engaging driving experience, the Mazda6 Tourer certainly represents serious value for money.

In addition, an engine range that performs well but runs clean means savings on both fuel and tax costs, while the additional space offered by the Tourer over the regular saloon gives extra practicality when you need it most.

Buyers in the market for a stylish estate with plenty of space in the back, seats for a growing family, but that’s also nippy on the road should find that the Mazda6 Tourer represents an extremely fine choice indeed.
