Fiat Panda 4×4 wins Towcar award

Fiat’s Panda 4×4 model has won big at this year’s Caravan Club Towcar of the Year awards, having been named the best car under £16,500.

The results were announced last week at the awards ceremony in London, where the four-wheel drive version of the Panda beat strong competition to grab the top spot.

Award Winning

Judges at the awards, made up of a panel of experienced journalists and road testers, evaluated the award-winning dinky 4×4 not only on its towing ability, but also its comfort, practicality and performance.

As well as that, each car in the shortlist was tested for its ability to shift typical holiday gear and caravan equipment, as well as its ease of use when hooking up a caravan or trailer.

In particular, the judges noted that the Panda 4×4 equipped with a 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbodiesel was the pick of the bunch, praising the engine’s performance.

In addition, the Caravan Club panel lauded the Panda 4×4’s visibility, plus its comfortable interior, noting that the cabin was “stylish and funky”.

Fiat UK’s head of brand, Kate McLaren, said: “It’s well over 30 years since we launched the Fiat Panda 4×4 and I’m delighted that, three decades later, we are still winning top awards with it.

“The Panda 4×4 has won the under £16,500 category, but it does not look out of place up against much more expensive cars.”

She continued: “We have proved once again that Panda 4×4 offers so much in terms of practicality and style, but with huge benefits in running costs and looking after the environment.”

Fiat Panda Cross

The Panda family has been recently expanded with the addition of another rugged off-roading version, the new Fiat Panda Cross.

With a more aggressive styling than the standard Panda 4×4, the Panda Cross features new light clusters, a new bumper and integrated fog lights, plus extended wheel arches and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Despite retaining the cute looks of the Panda range, thisversion is not to be taken lightly and also features an optional protective steel underbody shield, further boosting its credentials as a bona-fide off-roader.

Two engine options are available on the model, a 90bhp 0.9-litre TwinAir turbo petrol and an 80bhp 1.3-litre MultiJet turbodiesel, with emissions as low as 114g/km with 60.1mpg.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 is available to buy now, priced from £14,295. Currently in production, the Panda Cross will start from £15,945 when it goes on sale later this year. In the meantime, you can read our exclusive review on the Perrys site.
