Citroen unveils first premium SUV
The car is not only the first premium-styled SUV from Citroen but also its first SUV offering from its DS sub-brand.
The DS 6WR takes a lot of inspiration from an earlier Citroen concept, the DS Wild Rubis, which was shown at the Shanghai Motor Show last year. Back then the French manufacturer hinted towards the prospect of producing a premium SUV for customers and now those plans have been confirmed via the DS 6WR.
Size-wise the Citroen DS 6WR is similar in dimensions to the Nissan Qashqai crossover SUV. The Citroen model features numerous classy design features such as 19-inch alloy wheels and a chrome-finished side signature with aluminium bars.
The front grille has two chrome-finished wings connecting it to the headlamps. The exterior light signature meanwhile features Xenon technology for better visibility during night time driving.
At the rear, DS initials are embossed on the side of each light cluster. The sculpted style of the wraparound tailgate is underlined at the base with a chrome finish and a twin exhaust.
Engine options for the Citroen DS 6WR include a 160bhp 1.6-litre e-THP petrol unit and another petrol unit, a 200bhp 1.6-litre THP motor. With either engine the DS 6WR is turbocharged and also utilises a six-speed automatic gearbox and power is transferred to the front wheels.
While there is no four-wheel drive powertrain available for this SUV, Citroen has included Grip Control which can electronically read the road conditions and optimise traction on different types of terrain. This not only gives drivers better control but also benefits fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Citroen plan to build and sell its new DS 6WR SUV in China. While the chances the SUV will reach the UK market are currently unclear, such a move has not been ruled out. Tellingly, Citroen has said that the DS 6WR "represents the next stage in development of DS in China and around the world".
If it does arrive to the UK, the Citroen DS 6WR could quickly establish itself as a major competitor in the mid-size SUV market segment.
Other potential rivals for the DS 6WR, besides the previously mentioned Qashqai, could include the Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga and Kia Sportage.
Pricing for the Citroen DS 6WR here in the UK could start from around £20,000.
