Citroen C4 Cactus review

The Citroen C4 Cactus is not as prickly as its name might suggest: in fact, it was designed with comfort and style in mind, and it has certainly delivered! Let’s take a closer look.

Exterior

This car is the epitome of functionality. Every stylistic choice was inspired by a need that had been expressed by customers and drivers worldwide. The graphical features, such as the Airbump side panels, are a prime example of Citroen using stylistic elements to create a practical car.

The Airbump facility on the Citroen C4 Cactus is a worldwide exclusive. The vast array of air capsules under a soft TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) skin protects your car against everyday bumps and dents that could become costly and ruin the finish of your car very quickly. This skin comes in 4 colours (Dune, Chocolate, Black and Stone Grey) that ensure your car catches the eye, but is protected too.

The Citroen C4 Cactus has a bold personality, and it is matched by its bold exterior with unusual features that highlight its functionality. The aforementioned Airbump panels attract the eye, but it is features such as the stylish yet practical roof bars that make this car all the more appealing to a buyer.

Interior

The Citroen C4 Cactus’ focus on comfort is apparent in the wide sofa-effect seats that are some of the most comfortable we’ve tested. The spacious cabin gives the car an open and welcoming feel, which is emphasised by the smart and accessible storage compartments placed next to each passenger seat.

Thanks to the airbag being stored in the roof, Citroen has been able to introduce a new ‘Top Box’ feature – a compartment that’s directly accessible on the top of the dashboard, and provides 8.5 litres of storage for all of your bits and bobs. The large boot is also a plus, and at 358 litres it’s one of the biggest in its class.

The cabin is stylish and sophisticated; choose from one of three ‘ambiences’ – all of which display an attractive colour scheme for the seat upholstery and around the cabin.

The techie aspects of this car are fantastic. Citroen boasts that the technology is “100% digital and 100% intuitive”. All of the controls are contained on a single 7” touch screen with 7 touch sensitive buttons. This is standard on all variations of the Citroen C4 Cactus, and every function is available in just one click. This includes; media, navigation, driving aids, telephone and connected services such as Citroen Multicity. Having this all at your fingertips makes for an easy drive that helps you become a better driver.

On the road

The suspension in the Citroen C4 Cactus guarantees a smooth ride by absorbing all of those bumps in the road (and those ever-growing potholes). The extra-large panoramic glass roof offers high thermal protection and allows filtered and pleasant light to enter the cabin – keeping it naturally light and breezy.

The ETG clutchless gearbox means that you won’t have a gear lever – just the three-buttoned Easy Push system to get you on your way. D to drive, N for neutral and R for (you guessed it) reverse. Nice and simple to get you on your way.
The ‘Magic Wash’ windscreen washers have definitely earned their name – they improve your visibility, reduce the dirt on the bonnet and consume less windscreen cleaner fluid by incorporating the washer jets directly into the ends of the wiper blades. The car also includes a couple of other gadgets such as park assist, rear view camera, hill start assist and static cornering lights to help you be the best driver you can be in any conditions.

Our verdict

This car certainly catches the eye – the distinctive design sets it apart from most other vehicles and protects the car from errant drivers and shopping trollies thanks to the Airbump system. This is the only car fitted with this technology, and just for that reason alone it’s a great idea to invest in one, especially if you spend a lot of your time in busy car parks.

The Citroen C4 Cactus is cheap to run and good for the environment thanks to its lightweight appearance and innovative engines (PureTech petrol and BlueHDi 100). It’s fun to drive and the light steering makes it fantastic for round-town driving. It’s also great value for money, starting at just £12,990.
