Volkswagen tops European sales chart
Volkswagen sold the most new cars across Europe in January, it has been revealed.Figures from Jato Dynamics also showed Ford claimed second spot in the sales chart, followed by Peugeot and Vauxhall.
However, none of the top ten manufacturers actually posted increased registrations and overall the number of units shifted fell by 26 per cent compared with the same month in 2008.
Commenting on the results, David Di Girolamo from Jato Dynamics said: "Nobody in the industry is surprised at what we're witnessing across the European market, but in the cold light of day, the raw figures do paint a very bleak picture."
Despite this, he pointed out there had been some success stories.
Mr Di Girolamo explained Jaguar had recorded a 35.5 per cent growth in sales in the first month of the year mainly as a result of the popularity of its XF model.
In other news, Jato Dynamics recently revealed half of all new European cars boast average CO2 emissions of 130 g/km.
