Scrappage scheme 'a step in the right direction'
A range of dealerships - from Vauxhall to Volkswagen - may well benefit from the vehicle scrappage incentive scheme, it has been suggested.The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders welcomed Alistair Darling's announcement that the government is to introduce a cash for bangers initiative.
It added the group was confident the programme would encourage more people into car and van showrooms up and down the country.
Chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The scheme recognises the economic value of the motor industry and we are determined to make it a success."
Participants in the initiative will receive £2,000 towards a new vehicle by trading in a car or van that is at least ten years old.
However, the person in question must have owned the auto they are planning to get rid of for a minimum of 12 months.
Last month, SMMT announced it was cancelling the 2010 British International Motor Show, as a result of the effect of the economic downturn on vehicle manufacturers.
