Production starts at new Russian VW site
Russian officials were on-hand this week to see Volkswagen's (VW's) new assembly plant in the country start production. Some 600 people, including the deputy prime minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin, watched as the Kaluga site rolled out its first two vehicles - the VW Passat and the Skoda Octavia.
The German automaker commented that is hoping to manufacture a total of 66,000 of the vehicles by the end of 2008.
It is also pleased to have arrived in Russia, according to the chairman of the board of management at VW, Professor Martin Winterkorn.
"Local production of VW and Skoda brand vehicles in the up-and-coming city of Kaluga now gives us the chance to increasingly profit from rapid growth on Russias automotive market," he said.
