Government announces improved road safety figures
A new government report may make pleasant reading for all motorists, whether they drive a Volkswagen or a Vauxhall.The Department for Transport has revealed traffic fatalities and casualties have fallen to a record low.
As a result, the government has already met the 2010 target it set itself for improving road safety.
Fatalities dropped from 2,946 in 2007 to 2,538 last year, while overall casualties decreased from 27,774 to 26,029.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) welcomed the news.
Spokesman Kevin Clinton commented: "Every reduction in these numbers represents a person who has not been killed or injured and a family which has not suffered the devastation caused by a road accident."
However, the government was warned not to become complacent, thereby allowing the number of deaths and injuries to start creeping up again.
In other news, Rospa recently announced it was trying to help keep young drivers safe behind the wheel at work by offering free workshops.
