Firms unite over battery development

A number of corporations based in Germany have joined forces in order to aid the development of next-generation batteries.

BASF, Bosch, Evonik Degussam Li-Tec, STEAG Saar Energie and automobile manufacturer Volkswagen are looking to speed up sustainable power source growth.

Head of research for the automaker Dr Juergen Leohold called the move "an important step" in the production of zero-emission vehicles.

"In the future, there will be parallel use of various automotive drive systems, all the way to purely electric drive. A high-performance lithium-ion battery as the energy carrier will be a key technology," he said.

The companies will invest close to 360 million euros (£259.3 million) into battery development in the coming years.

This comes as the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association has claimed that it is looking to reduce the amount of truck emissions to "the most ambitious level possible" in the near future.
