British invention may impress eco-friendly drivers
Green drivers who purchase autos at any retail outlet - from a Volkswagen to a Vauxhall car dealership - may be impressed with a recent development from one British company.Torotrak - a Leyland-based engineering firm - has come up with a new transmission, which it claims could help manufacturers "slash CO2 emissions".
According to the group, the car part allows an engine to function at low speed, even when the vehicle it is powering is travelling quickly.
It explained this helps to maximise efficiency and cut fuel consumption.
On top of this, the company stated the system - which utilises steel discs and rollers instead of traditional toothed gears - promotes seamless acceleration and deceleration.
It claimed this eliminates spikes in exhaust emissions that can harm the planet.
The firm said a number of major manufacturers have shown interest in its development.
Meanwhile, Torotrak announced earlier this year that it was performing well despite the recession.
