Vauxhall Astra 'helps GME post record sales'
Strong demand for the new Vauxhall Corsa has helped General Motors Europe (GME) sell a record number of motors during 2006, it has been claimed.Last year, the European offshoot of the US-based automotive giant distributed two million vehicles - more than ever before.
And the sales figures mean that GME has managed to report its first period of profitability across a 12-month cycle for seven years - in news that could potentially encourage the company to invest more heavily in Europe in future.
Commenting on the revelation that GME recorded adjusted earnings of $227 million (£117 million) in 2006, General Motors' chairman and chief executive Rick Wagoner said: "Our multi-brand approach in Europe is really gaining traction."
"The Opel/Vauxhall brands are strengthening, led by products like the all-new Corsa and segment-leading Meriva."
Earlier this month, an automotive journalist writing in Netcars gave the third-generation model of the Meriva a maximum five-star rating in the roominess category.
Explaining the decision, the reviewer explained that the car benefited from an unparalleled flexibility of seating arrangements.
