SMMT: Supermini demand grows by 18.7%

Last month saw demand for superminis increase by almost a fifth, according to the latest industry statistics, which could be of interest to people considering the purchase of a new Vauxhall Corsa.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveal that there were 54,918 new car registrations in the supermini sector in January 2007.

To put this into context, this represents a monthly rise of 18.7 per cent.

Commenting on the revelation, SMMT's chief executive Christopher MacGowan said that increased demand may be a reflection of a range of factors.

"The supermini segment performed outstandingly well," he said.

"This possibly reflects buyers taking such things as fuel costs, CO2 performance and interest rate movements into account more and more when purchasing a new car."

One of the top-selling vehicles in the supermini sector is the Vauxhall Corsa.

In a review of the sixth-generation Corsa for automotive website Netcars, the model received four stars out of five overall and a maximum five-star rating in the running costs category.
