Ford S-MAX and Vauxhall Corsa score highly for safety

The Ford S-Max and the new Vauxhall Corsa have scored highly in a series of European safety tests.

In the latest round of Euro NCAP safety testing the new Vauxhall Corsa received five stars for adult occupant protection.

It scored top marks in the side impact tests, with only slight concerns about head-on collisions.

During the head-on collision test the dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and made contact with the steering wheel. Nevertheless, the Vauxhall Corsa was awarded an "adequate" rating for frontal collisions.

For child protection the Corsa scored three out of five stars, with protection for an 18-month-old baby rate particularly highly.

The Ford S-Max meanwhile, scored the highest marks ever awarded to an MPV. The car was awarded five out of five stars for adult occupant protection, with a maximum score for all aspects of side impacts and virtually everything in the frontal impact tests.

Euro NCAP chairman, Claes Tingvall, said: "I am very pleased to see Ford and Opel achieve such good results with these new cars. The S-MAX now sets the standards for other MPV's to follow while the Corsa is another high-performing Supermini.

"It shows that safety is high on the agenda for responsible car-makers and Euro NCAP is pleased to be able to give them recognition for their efforts."
