Vauxhall Astra's successor will be "sportier and sharper than ever"

Vauxhall enthusiasts have been put on alert after a motoring publication previewed the new Astra.

Although not expected to arrive in Vauxhall car dealerships until 2010, Auto Express magazine claims to have obtained exclusive images of the small family car, which can be powered by either a petrol or diesel engine.

And among features found inside the new Astra, the report suggests there will be an integrated satellite navigation system and a hands-free telephone kit.

Meanwhile, automotive journalist Sam Hardy also pointed out that the model looks set to be more sport-oriented than its predecessor.

"The next-generation Astra is sportier and sharper than ever before," he said.

"Thanks to a low nose and rising tail, it has an athletic stance - one that's complemented by the bold but instantly recognisable front end."

The Vauxhall brand is owned by General Motors, which is the largest automaker in the world.

Chevrolet and Opel are among the other high-profile marques operated by the American company.
