UK set to build Vauxhall Astra successor

The UK heritage of the Vauxhall brand has been reinforced after US owners General Motors confirmed the country was among four preparing to build the successor to the Vauxhall Astra.

A car plant in Ellesmere Port, Liverpool joins facilities in Bochum, Germany, Gliwice, Poland and Trollhattan, Sweden as the sites that will construct the model for release in early 2010.

Currently, 2,200 workers are employed by the world's largest automaker at its base in Ellesmere Port.

"All of our western European plants have significantly improved over the past few years," commented Carl-Peter Forster, president of General Motors Europe.

"We would like to start the preparation work [for the next-generation vehicle] with our teams in Gliwice, Bochum, Ellesmere Port and Trolhattan."

Vauxhall forms the main element of General Motors' strategy in the UK market.

The automotive giant also owns Chevrolet in the US and Opel on the continent.
