Government plans 'are a step in the right direction'
A road safety charity has voiced its support for government plans to crackdown on dangerous drivers.Brake has claimed proposals to introduce tougher penalties for motorists caught speeding or found to be under the influence of drink or drugs are necessary in order to reduce the number of fatalities on Britain's roads.
The group added the success of the initiative would depend on how strict the authorities were about enforcing punishments.
Despite giving its backing to most of the government's plans, Brake stated it would oppose a move to reduce the number of points given to motorists who were caught travelling a couple of miles per hour too fast.
Chief executive Mary Williams said: "Speeding kills, maims and devastates families and communities and only a few miles [per hour] over a limit can be the difference between life and death."
Meanwhile, the charity recently called for the government to increase the number of 20 mph zones across the country.
