Motorists going "too far" to cut costs
People who have saved up their hard-earned money to buy the car of their dreams from their local Alfa Romeo or Chevrolet dealership may be putting their investment at risk by eco-coasting, it has been suggested.Kwik-Fit explained this new phenomenon involves motorists putting vehicles into neutral when travelling downhill.
Research by the firm found 15 per cent of car owners in the UK indulge in this practice in order to cut expenditure on petrol.
However, drivers were warned if they are out of gear they are out of control - and by doing this they were significantly increasing their chances of being involved in an accident.
Kwik-Fit's customer services director, David White, said: "Eco-coasting is clearly on the rise as millions of motorists look to save money on their fuel bills, but the associated dangers make it a money-saving step too far."
Meanwhile, another survey by the same company revealed the car a person drives affects how attractive they appear to potential boyfriends and girlfriends.
