Mazda MX-5 Icon unveiled

Mazda is launching a new special-edition version of the MX-5 sports car in time for the summer.

The new Mazda MX-5 Icon comes in two variants - a 1.8-litre version that has an on-the-road price tag of £16,825 and a 2.0-litre sibling that costs £17,825.

And British motorists looking to celebrate their roots may be interested to learn that, just like the Union Jack, the model is available in red, white and blue.

Commenting on the model, Rob Lindley, managing director of Mazda UK, said that it would offer buyers "excellent value", a "uniquely sporty rear-wheel drive" and a "wind-in-the-hair experience".

"We are sure that this new model is an Icon by name and the MX-5 is certainly iconic by nature," he added.

Recently, the Japanese car manufacturer announced that recent months had seen the MX-5 selling faster than ever before.

According to its figures, a record 1,973 MX-5s were bought in the UK in March 2007.
