Fans of the Seat Toledo have been alerted to news that the company has just won an award for its technological safety innovations.

German motoring club Automobil von Deutschland (AvD) awarded its AvD Innovationspreis 2006 prize to Erich Schmitt, president of Seat, in recognition of the Spanish automaker's steps towards improving road safety.

One of the innovations singled out by the judgement panel is the engineering work on the Toledo and other cars in Seat's range to improve its aerodynamics.

This streamlining work is thought to boost safety while also improving the aesthetic appearance of the family car.

A second innovation noted by the club is Seat's revision of external car design to create bodywork that crumples more easily when it comes into contact with pedestrians or bicycles.

It is hoped that this feature, included on several parts of the company's vehicle rostrum, will help reduce the risk of harm for both passengers and passers-by in the event of an accident.

Last month, Seat was awarded the manufacturer's title at the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, underlining the brand's racing pedigree.
