Seat Leon prototype uses sensors to improve safety

Safety-conscious drivers have been alerted to design innovations on a new Leon prototype that aim to warn them about potential driving dangers.

Currently being exhibited at the Intelligent Transportation Systems Congress in London, this Seat Leon utilises permanent sensors on both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

Inside the car, sensors track eye movement and blink frequency to determine a driver's state of alertness, emitting a loud noise and steering wheel vibrations should the motorist show signs of falling unconscious.

Meanwhile, the exterior of the Leon uses radar technology to scan the road ahead for potential impediments, with the information conveyed to drivers by means of a display mounted on the dashboard.

This week, the Spanish car manufacturer Seat announced that its year-to-date sales had increased by approximately 15 per cent when compared to its results for 2005.

One of the causes of this boost is the growing popularity of the Seat Altea car; sales of the hatchback have experienced a year-on-year rise of 34 per cent.
