Peugeot has beefed up its 407 model with the launch of a new four-cylinder, 2.2-litre diesel engine version. The new engine is the result of a collaboration between Ford and PSA, producing a ubiquitous engine that will be seen in everything from Fords to Mazdas, Land Rover to Jaguars. The French car manufacturer said that the new four-cylinder, 2.2-litre engine comes in both 170bhp and 156bhp single-turbo versions Peugeot said that the new engine has been developed from the existing 2.2 HDI unit, featuring piezo-electric fuel injection, a particulate filter, and twin overhead camshafts. Initial throttle response is boosted by the first turbo, which operates at up to 2,700rpm, with the second, smaller turbo kicking in later. Output peaks at 170bhp at 4,000rpm, producing torque of 277lb-feet at 1,500rpm. Performance varies across the 407 range, with the 407 saloon producing a top speed of 139mph and capable of doing 0-60mph acceleration in 8.2 seconds. The SW estate meanwhile has a top speed of 137mph and can do 0-60 in 45.5mpg Available in Sport trim, the new 407 saloon costs £21,100, while the SW estate is priced at £22,300, approximately £1,500 more than the 136bhp version. Meanwhile, Peugeot is also reaping the benefits of its emphasis on style in recent years. With scorching summer temperatures sales of open-top cars are booming, with Peugeot's 206 CC and 307 CC attracting 12.5 per cent of the market.
