Peugeot 407 SW 2.2 Sport XS

The 406 estate was an acclaimed load-lugger, picking up awards for its towing capabilities and reaping praise for its cavernous interior space. The 406 has now been replaced by the 407, a car whose agile chassis defies its bulk, and the SW version fills the void the 406 estate once occupied. The 'SW' badge declares that this model will be more of a 'Sports-Wagon' than a wardrobe on wheels, however. Peugeot claims that a full-on estate won't be included in the 407 line-up, due to the numbers of buyers moving away from conventional estates into MPVs like its 807.

The SW sits on the same wheelbase as the saloon, but its longer rear overhang contributes to longer overall dimensions. However, that extra span only converts to an extra 23 litres of boot space when filled up to the bottom of the windows. Folding the rear seats flat and filling the void from the backs of the front seats all the way to the roof line increases the capability to 1365 litres.
