Peugeot 4007 to 'benefit from lower emissions'

The new Peugeot 4007 SUV is set to avoid the most extreme of the proposed changes to the London Congestion Charging scheme.

Ken Livingstone, the capital's mayor, yesterday announced plans to introduce a sliding scale of charges based on CO2 emissions, meaning owners of the highest polluting cars would be charged £25 to drive into the city if the proposals are adopted.

Mr Livingstone said the charges were designed to help reduce CO2 emissions as part of the battle against climate change and picked out "Chelsea tractors" and performance cars as the worst offenders.

However, while a number of SUVs will find themselves in the top £25 charge bracket because they have emissions of more than 225 g/km of CO2, the Peugeot 4007 will not be joining them.

The new seven-seater, Peugeot's first ever SUV, uses a 2.2-litre HDi 156 engine with six-speed manual transmission which emits just 191 g/km of CO2, placing it in the £8 charge bracket.

It also means the 4007 benefits from a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 39.2 mpg.

Another significant proposed change to the congestion charge regulations is that cars in the top bracket will lose the entitlement to the residents' discount, which the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders estimates will result in owners of some family MPVs incurring an additional £5,000 a year in motoring costs.
