Sliding doors make city parking chaos disappear

Early Saturday morning, you need to dash down to the high street or supermarket to grab the paper, how do you do this without causing major damage to your car or someone else's?

The answer - buy a Peugeot 1007. The manufacturer markets the car as the answer to convenient city living and is the latest in Peugeot's line up of superminis, but does it live up to the name?

There are so many compact small cars in today's market all offering fuel economy (Mazda), at least a 1.3 litre engine perfect for darting around town (Ford) and a fair amount of storage space in the rear (Hyundai) so you may be asking what answers to everyday convience the 1007 can add to our lifestyles.

I have three words for you - automatic sliding doors - yes, you read correctly. Although like Marmite, after one taste you will either love them or hate them, the Peugeot 1007 comes with automatic doors, which slide out no more than one centimetre beyond the external mirrors or rear bumper.

This feature will help people with disabilities, prevent nasty accidents in tight car spaces and near misses when opening doors out on to the High Street. The 1007 is the first vehicle in its class to offer the feature and the doors are operated via remote control.

Now for those of you with images of large white mini van doors, clear your minds and get the thoughts out of your head, because the doors on the 1007 are sleek slim and sexy.

In fact, the 1007 is the type of car you would see a young mother living in London driving down to the supermarket or football practice in. It's a football mums car. It is shorter and higher than the 206 and the two sliding doors exposing access to the entire cabin and four seats help when packing the car with groceries or bags.

Another reason women will favour this car are the bright and electric paint finishes chosen by Peugeot for the outside, Flamenco Red, Cayman Green, Aegan Blue, Tacoma Yellow, Lunar Mist, China Blue and Salamanea Orange are just a few of the eleven shades that the car can sport.

The interior is also a decorators dream with the car offering the owner the ability to personalise the interior of their vehicle. There are 12 kits (£185 each including air vent surrounds) with vibrant or classic colours to choose from and according to the manufacturer these can be changed without tools in 15 minutes.

The 1007 also has speed sensitive power steering, an optional two Tronic gearbox, is available with a 1.4 litre or 1.6, 16 valve 110bhp petrol engine or 1.4 HDi diesel.

The diesel is much slower than the petrol and is more suited to an urban setting than on the open road. Those customers looking to travel on motorways should consider the petrol version.

The 1007 price starts at £10,850, which is a little heavy for its class and those first time car buyers who are likely to be enticed by its funky colourings and styles. The car definitely has personality but those people looking for a healthy price tag and balance with performance should consider if sliding doors are worth £2,000 extra pounds.
