Production drive at UK's largest manufacturer

Increasing desire for the new Nissan Qashqai has resulted in the firm announcing that it will be stepping up production at its Sunderland plant.

Nissan states that it has sold 130,000 units since its release in March 2007, adding that a third production shift at the site is necessary in order to meet demand.

The vehicle can be picked up by consumers in four-wheel drive and front-wheel drive systems while it also comes with an automatic five-speed or automatic six-speed gearbox based on preference.

And the move will solidify the Sunderland plant's position as the UK's largest producer and exporter of vehicles, having produced 353,000 in 2007 and expected to manufacture close to 400,000 this year.

The site was originally opened in 1986 as a way of cutting down delivery costs and export tariffs, while also allowing the firm to meet European demand for Nissan automobiles at a cheaper price.
