Nissan to build new car in UK

Nissan Motor has announced that it is to design and build its newest compact car in the UK.

The company said it will create the vehicle at its Sunderland plant. The car will be a follow-up to the current Micra line, which is due to be phased out in 2010.

At least three models will be designed for the newest range and will focus on the entry-level car market, Nissan revealed.

The news was unveiled during a visit by prime minister Gordon Brown to Nissan's London-based European Design Centre.

"Today's announcement that a brand new car is to be designed and built in the UK is another important boost to our manufacturing industry and builds upon Nissan's recent commitments to increase investment and jobs at its record-breaking Sunderland plant," Mr Brown commented.

Nissan produced its first Maxima four-door sports car in the US last week.
