Nissan set for Sunderland expansion
Nissan has announced details of a major ramp up in its manufacturing capacity with a £4.5 million expansion to its Sunderland car plant.The automotive firm will bring up to 4,000 jobs to the city, after agreeing a partnership with Sunderland City Council and property developers Wilton and Clugston.
Under the deal, a new logistics centre processing thousands of different parts for the company's various models will be established.
In addition a 690,000 sq ft business park will be established using space freed up by the manufacturer.
Trevor Mann, senior vice president of manufacturing in Europe, commented: "The new centre will handle inbound parts for the Sunderland plant. Increasingly, these are coming from further afield, in bulk volume.
"By bulk sourcing parts we are making significant total cost savings, which helps our plant to improve its competitiveness. This in turn puts us in a stronger position when bidding for future models."
Work will begin on Nissan's new logistics centre later this month.
