Nissan demonstrates safety commitment

Nissan is to showcase its continuing commitment to road safety by unveiling a concept car designed to help prevent drink-driving.

The vehicle includes a number of gadgets that detect whether a motorist is sober enough to drive and paying attention once they are behind the wheel.

A sensor able to detect the presence of alcohol in the perspiration on a driver's hand is built into the gear stick and on sensing that the alcohol level is above the threshold it will lock the transmission and immobilise the car.

Mounted on the dashboard is a facial monitoring system that uses a camera to detect signs of drowsiness and then issues a voice alert via the car's satellite navigation system and tightens the seat belt to gain the driver's attention.

Finally, the car monitors driving behaviour and if its detects signs that the driver is not paying sufficient attention to the road - such as the vehicle drifting out of its lane - it uses the satellite navigation system and seat belt to send a warning to the motorist.

It is not yet clear when the technology will make its way into production vehicles, but one new safety measure that will soon be seen on Nissan cars is the pop-up engine hood.

The device, which ensures the bonnet flips open in the event of a head-on collision to provide an extra layer of protection for the driver, will be fitted to the new Nissan Skyline when its is launched later in the year.
