Automaker looks to keep youth on straight and narrow

Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan is attempting to help young people brake before they crash into a life of car crime.

A course run by prison officers Neil Dainty and Dave Phelan teaches convicts the ramifications of a life breaking the law by committing vehicle-related crimes.

While Home Office figures show that there has been a 51 per cent drop in such offences since 1997, some 1.73 million criminal acts involving cars, vans and other automobiles were reported by the body over the course of 2005 and 2006.

The motor firm stated that the primary aim of the project is to "keep youngsters on the straight and narrow after their time in prison".

Nissan's youth programme uses research from all over the world and has been the subject of praise from the Prison Service in addition to receiving accreditation from the Open College Network.
