Scrappage scheme 'could boost production without hurting the planet'
A scrappage incentive scheme could help the motoring industry and the planet, it has been claimed.Clean Green Cars pointed out a German initiative that offers drivers money to trade in old vehicles has resulted in sector growth of 21.5 per cent in February and it is predicted 600,000 extra autos will be sold by the end of the year.
However, the group explained there would need to be conditions attached for this type of scheme to have a beneficial impact on the environment.
It stated the financial reward should only be available to people buying a model that emits less than 130 g/km of carbon dioxide.
Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, said: "There are not many ways of boosting production without harming the environment, but this is one."
Last October, the same company reported Mazda and Mini were among the top ten most successful manufacturers in terms of cutting carbon dioxide emissions during the first nine months of 2008.
