Mini Cooper Convertible 1.6 has 'men in mind'

Giles Smith of the Times says men like to measure everything - so the Mini Cooper Convertible 1.6 should be right up their alley and may see them heading to their nearest car dealership.

He explains the new convertible versions of the Mini come with a new measuring device known as the Openometer, which calculates just how many hours the car has been driven with its top down.

Although the "clever and amusing" addition is meant to be light-hearted, there are a few serious safety features added, including a roll bar that "automatically bursts out of the bodywork in 150 milliseconds at the first sign that the car is about to go wheels-up".

The roof mechanism has also been tweaked - and is better for it - taking 15 seconds to open completely. It will even work while the car is moving at speeds of up to 20mph, says the expert.

Meanwhile, to celebrate the 50th birthday of Mini, Paul Weller will headline Mini United 2009, which is being held at the Silverstone race circuit from May 22nd to 24th.
