Perrys Milton Keynes celebrates 15 years of selling ex BT vans
Perrys’ used car manager, Stephen Thompson, gave us an insight into a relationship which has provided local business customers with some fantastic savings and deals over the last fifteen years – the used car department’s ex fleet acquisition contract with BT vans.
“The relationship came about through sourcing BT’s ex fleet management vehicles.” Stephen commented, “Back when we first started, all the vans used to be grey and pretty basic, lacking luxuries like power steering. I remember one van we used to sell which was essentially a Transit Flat Bed, with a specially made large box bolted onto the back with a single door at the very back. These were very popular with Painter decorators, and market stallholders.
“As the van was specifically built for BT, it did not have a model name as such, which did not help with advertising or discussing the model with customers.
“It looked a little bit like a Transit Luton, but boxier and slightly smaller inside. We christened it as a Transit Dunstable! We came up with this name mainly because in looks, from a distance, it was close to a Transit Luton and, as the town Dunstable is close to Luton, it seemed to fit nicely. The name stuck and became its official model name at BT as well as in our adverts.”
These days you won’t find vans like the Dunstable. As the relationship has progressed, and technologies have advanced, Perrys’ stock of BT vans has improved exponentially. Customers can enjoy a selection of quality vans which now, as well as being all white, benefit from all the latest mod cons like power steering and air bags.
Many of the ex BT vans come with useful internal racking, which can be removed by Perrys at no extra cost, or, if desired, left in. Most have side loading doors, double back doors, a metal driver’s bulk head and come with an integrated ladder rack on the roof. Some even come with a roof mounted flashing orange light!
Stephen continued: “Perrys can now offer new shape diesel Transits, Connect T200s, which are based on the Mondeo floor plan like the Jaguar X Type, and they drive superbly for a van. We also stock Corsa vans, Fiesta turbo diesel vans and even a Ford KA van, which is the only petrol van Perrys’ used car department carries. The ex BT vans are often low mileage for their year and, unlike many used vans which have a hard life, these are well maintained and looked after.”
Sourcing the vans through BT also has an impact on the price. “As BT buy in such large quantities from Vauxhall and Ford, the vans are often sold with larger than normal discounts, which Perrys can then pass on to the customers.”
To ensure that all the vans sold through Perrys’ BT van display meet the exacting standards set by the Used Car department, each van is given a full service and, where required, an MOT. Each van is also sold with a print out service history and a Perrys’ guarantee, and is professionally valeted.
Stephen concluded: “Over the years this relationship has enabled Perrys to supply our customers with quality vans at affordable prices. I am looking forward to another 15 years working with BT, which will enable us to continue to offer these great vans to our clients.”
