Mazda to unveil RX-8 Hydrogen RE at ONS2006 Exhibition

Mazda has announced it is to unveil its RX-8 Hydrogen RE at the ONS2006 Exhibition in Stavanger, Norway this August.

However, the Japanese manufacturer does not intend the RX-8 Hydrogen RE to form part of a static display, but will take advantage of the opening of Norway's first hydrogen filling station near Stavanger for the first demonstration the vehicle's on-road capabilities outside Japan.

Brage W Johansen, manager of Hydrogen Group, said: "The hydrogen station in Stavanger is the first step of a long and exciting journey for hydrogen, and we are very proud to have Mazda present at the opening."

The RX-8 Hydrogen RE is not a prototype hydrogen car, but a commercially viable hydrogen powered vehicle.

Indeed, earlier this year Mazda began leasing its dual-fuel hydrogen and petrol powered rotary-engine to companies across Japan.

James Muir, president and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe, said: "Mazda means business when it comes to developing alternative fuel vehicles.

"Proof of this, is that we will be driving into a new Norwegian hydrogen filling station in a car that is not a prototype, but a model that Mazda has begun to lease to regional governmental authorities and companies in Japan. It uses both petrol and hydrogen at the flick of a switch. It's safe and it's fun to drive."

Mr Muir went on to say that with several European countries beginning to invest in hydrogen infrastructures the RX-8 Hydrogen RE represents an key step towards mass production.
