Mazda celebrates bounty birthday bash

Mazda UK is celebrating its fifth birthday this month and is celebrating it in style as current sales are in line to break records.

Thus far this year Mazda's sales are up by ten per cent, despite a four per cent decline in the UK car Markey overall.

The Japanese manufacturer is now on track to sell 50,000 units during the full year. This compares with just 7,000 vehicles sold per year by Mazda's predecessor MCL.

Rob Lindley, managing director of Mazda Motors UK, said that surpassing the 50,000 sales threshold will be a landmark for both staff and dealers as well as a milestone in sales.

"We had 55 people who had been working for the previous importer MCL in August 2001; we now have 98 staff. Of course over five years we have seen some people come and go but for all of us, staff and dealers, achieving 50,000 will be really special.

"There will be other great milestones in the future of course but I doubt any will be quite as special as this one, and as a mature company we will probably not see growth in the next five years as we have enjoyed since 2001."

Meanwhile, Jeremy Thomson, sales director, said that Mazda is currently undergoing something of a product led revival that has seen its share of the UK car market grow from 0.5 per cent to two per cent within five years.

This trend is expected to continue as Mazda gears up for the launch of the CX-7 crossover SUV in July and the Mazda 2 replacement's debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2007.
