Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 'retains performance of a soft-top'
The performance of the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe is indistinguishable from that of its lighter soft-top variant, according to one test driver.Paul Horrell, consultant editor at Top Gear magazine, has made the claim after the Mazda car was voted Roadster of the Year 2006 at the automotive publication's awards ceremony, reports Easier.
The hard-top roof can move from top-down to top-up in 12 seconds, which the Japanese automaker claims is a record for the car industry.
And while it does add an additional 37 kg to the driver, Mr Horrell has suggested that the handling is just as responsive as with the soft-top.
"Could I feel the extra 37 kg?," he asked.
"Hand on heart, no, probably because it's concentrated right in the middle of the car. The Roadster Coupe is still hyper-agile through corners."
Earlier this month, Neil Lyndon, automotive reviewer for the Daily Telegraph, added his name to the list of critics praising the vehicle.
In particular, he approved the fact that the folding roof is stored in its own compartment, since he explained that this means it does not detract from the boot's overall storage capacity.
