Vehicle safety ratings 'simplified'

Safety-conscious car buyers will now only have one rating to consider when looking at what protection a vehicle offers in the event of an accident.

Euro Ncap has recently revealed the results of the first round of crash tests which use a new scoring system.

Instead of being awarded three separate marks, models simply receive one overall rating.

Vehicles can receive anything from one to five stars.

The rating takes into account how well adult and children occupants would be protected in an accident, alongside any features that help protect a pedestrian should they be knocked down.

Four out of the six cars examined so far under the new system received a maximum five-star rating.

They were the Toyota iQ, Toyota Avensis, Mitsubishi Lancer and Mazda6.

Meanwhile, the Citroen C3 Picasso and the Subaru Impreza were awarded four stars.

Euro Ncap said it had made the changes to encourage carmakers to put more effort into protecting pedestrians.
