Mazda is gearing up to unveil a new concept car at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2006.

The new hybrid model is a blend of the Mazda 5 and a crossover SUV and will make its debut at the 2006 North American International Auto Show.

The five-seater Mazda CX-7 is described by the carmaker as "a fun-to-drive SUV with the soul of a sports car". It is scheduled for release on the US market in spring 2006, with a European version planned at a later stage.

Powered by a 244bhp, intercooled 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, the car is the third concept vehicle from Mazda in the past five months.

Mazda has refused to release too many details about the CX-7, but has stated that it comes with a "wide range of utilities", including an Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive facility, ABS Dynamic Stability Control and traction control as standard.

Mazda will also place its Kabura compact sports coupe concept car on display in Detroit next month.
