Mazda3 and RX-8 'selling well in Cyprus'

Sales of the Mazda3 and the automotive company's RX-8 are reportedly doing well in Cyprus, according to a leading figure at the company.

Ian Crawford, RHD Mediterranean markets manager at Mazda UK, reports that Cypriot Mazda car dealerships have seen growth in sales of 71 per cent in the past year and 300 per cent since 2004, when the country's operations came under the jurisdiction of Mazda UK.

The latest Mazda car to hit the showrooms there has been the Mazda3, with the 1.4 and 1.6-litre models proving especially popular and accounting for nine per cent of the country's C class sales.

Meanwhile, the powerful Mazda RX-8 has been a big hit with punters looking to avoid the country's high registration takes, which are based on engine size.

The car is perceived to have a 1.3-litre engine, although its twin-rotary system equates its actual output to 2.6-litres.

Mr Crawford adds that the company's future is promising, insisting that "new products in 2007 will provide a real opportunity for us".

Mazda currently has a 3.5 per cent share of the Cypriot market.
