Mazda2 wins world car award
The World Car of the Year award for 2008 has been awarded to the Mazda2.Judges from Asia, Europe and the Americas voted the vehicle ahead of the Ford Mondeo and Mercedes-Benz C-Class at the New York International Auto Show on March 20th 2008.
The vehicle was originally launched in 2003 and last year Japan received the second generation model, which the firm states is fun to drive and has environmental features.
Dan Morris, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of marketing, sales and customer service, called the achievement wonderful.
He said: "We are delighted … The all-new Mazda2 is exceeding our highest expectations, demonstrating it can compete and win against the best sub-compact cars in any market in the world."
Last year, Mazda produced some 1.3 million vehicles for sale around the world, with most being manufactured in Japan.
The company is based in Hiroshima and was founded in 1920.
