'Fifth of three-year-old cars fail first MoT'

  07/05/2008 14:14:40

More than one in five cars over three years old fails their first MoT test, according to new research.

IAM Motoring Trust research, as found through the Freedom of Information Act, shows that 21.6 per cent of the vehicles assessed did not meet requirements.

The company added that some £465 million was spent by motorists attempting to fix problems highlighted in the MoT in 2006.

Neil Greig, IAM Trust director, questioned whether motorists are getting a raw deal when it comes to the tests.

"The high UK failure rates may argue against relaxing our MoT testing regime from three to four years on road-safety grounds. But do we have the full picture?" he said.

Under UK law, it is illegal to drive a vehicle which has not passed an MoT test.

However, an automobile which fails can be retested at the same test centre at a reduced price so long as it is returned within a set amount of time.
