Congestion plans for Manchester revealed

  20/06/2008 16:06:04

Transport authorities in Manchester have revealed their plans to introduce a new congestion charge area in the city, it has been reported.

According to the BBC, the proposed inner ring of the congestion zone will include crossing the M60.

In addition, entering and leaving the city at peak times of the day will result in a charge for motorists, the news source stated.

Local officials believe that the plans will help the city incorporate a "world-class public transport system".

However, a public consultation is needed before transport officials can make the decision final and begin enforcing the zone and tariff.

Road pricing has proved to be a big issue in the UK over the last two years.

An online petition set up on the 10 Downing Street website saw some 1.7 million people sign against the system, putting pressure on then-PM Tony Blair.
