Land Rover Range Rover Sport wins leisure car recognition

The driveability of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has been underlined as it received recognition as the best in the Leisure Car category at a recent awards ceremony.

At the Axa Car of the Year Awards, the model scored "consistently highly" among members of the Ulster Motoring Writers Association, according to the association's chairman Jim McCauley.

And McCauley explained what features he believed had helped the off-roader to stand out from the crowd.

"As well as its outstanding on and off-road capability, it offers a quality driving environment that has few equals," he said.

"It is an outstanding testament to the UK motor industry."

Although now owned by American automotive giant Ford, Land Rover retains links with its British heritage.

Last year, production of the new second-generation Freelander model began at the company's Halewood car manufacturing plant on Merseyside.

Speaking at the time, local MP Eddie O'Hara told the BBC that production of the vehicle is expected to stay in the region for at least nine years.
