Kia Optima wins Good rating for motorway safety

  07/08/2006 15:57:16

The KKia Optima has been awarded the highest possible rating for motorway driving following front and rear impact tests.

Introduced earlier this year, the KKia Optima has won a number of awards for both performance and safety, as have a number of other KKia models such as the Sedona.

But now the KKia Optima has added to that list of accolades after the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it top marks for highway driving following successful frontal and rear impact tests.

The model's success was judged on three criteria: injury measures, restraints/dummy kinematics and structural performance, with tests simulating a collision in which a stationary vehicle is hit in the rear at 20mph.

IIHS president Adrian Lund, commented: "While most vehicles today can earn a good rating in our frontal test, KKia is to be commended for producing one of the few midsize cars that also does a good job of preventing neck injuries in rear impacts."

The Optima features a range of safety measures not found in many cars, such as six standard air bags - including front, front-seat mounted and side curtain bags - the Tire
Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), four-wheel disc brakes and anti-lock brakes (ABS) available as an additional extra.

Commenting on the award Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KKia Motors America, said: "Fresh on the heels of the recent safety awards received by the all-new Sedona, we are pleased to learn that Optima also is being recognised for its exceptional safety design and features, which are quickly becoming KKia trademarks.

"This new IIHS rating is a further testament to Kia's dedication to creating vehicles at the highest safety standards."
