Kia announces first US car plant

The automaker Kia Motors Corporation has officially announced the construction of its first North American plant, which a company boss claims will help to establish the firm as a world class carmaker.

Set to be built in West Point, Georgia, the new car plant is scheduled to start turning out vehicles from 2009 and could produce up to 300,000 vehicles at optimum capacity.

Although the plant is expected to feed the North American market, it could also help to match supply with demand in European Kia dealerships.

Mong-Koo Chung, chairman of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, said that the new facility should help Kia's transformation into a global car producer.

"The establishment of the US plant will serve as a springboard for us to achieve our ultimate goal of firmly establishing Kia as a truly world-class global automaker," he said.

Like Hyundai, Kia is a car manufacturer with origins in South Korea.

However, right-hand drive vehicles are readily available from Kia car dealerships across the UK.
